House Party: No. 17 Tritons Defeat Chico State in Home Opener, 81-47

UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. — It’s good to be home.

The No. 17 University of California San Diego women’s basketball team put on a show in front of the home crowd on Saturday evening, defeating Chico State in its first game in the “new” renovated RIMAC Arena, 81-47.

It was also the first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest this season for UC San Diego (5-0, 1-0 CCAA).

The Tritons have now won seven-straight games against Chico State (3-1, 0-1). It marks the fourth-straight year UC San Diego has won its home opener, and was its seventh-consecutive home victory dating back to last season.

Senior guard Joleen Yang and junior forward Mikayla Williams scored 17 points apiece, as Williams recorded her third double-double of the season by tallying 14 rebounds.

Junior forward Haleigh Hatfield also finished with 14 rebounds to go along with six points, while freshman guard Brianna Claros scored 16 points with six assists in her home debut.

In addition, junior forward Sydney Sharp had a good all-around game with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

UC San Diego jumped ahead early on and never looked back. Claros scored five-straight points in the first period to put the Tritons ahead 10-4 midway through the opening quarter, and the freshman’s 3-pointer in transition made it 31-15 with 8:20 left in the half.

A three from Sharp extended the advantage to 15 with two minutes to go in the second quarter, as UC San Diego took a 39-27 lead into intermission.

A beautiful back-door bounce pass from Claros to a cutting Stephanie Moore for a layup summed up a nice second half for the Tritons, pushing the lead to 30, 71-41, with 8:30 remaining.

UC San Diego heads back on the road next week, as the Tritons travel north to take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, Nov. 29, before playing at Cal State San Marcos on Dec. 1.
