Tritons Advance to Championship Game with Win vs. Western Oregon

UC San Diego

HONOLULU - Four Tritons scored in double figures as the seventh-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team earned a 73-63 win over Western Oregon Monday night in a semifinal game of the Hoops in Hawai'i D2 Power Invitational.

With its seventh consecutive win, UC San Diego moved to 10-1 on the season. The Tritons will face undefeated and 20th-ranked Chaminade (9-0) in the tourney championship game on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 10 p.m. PT.

"It was a physical game against a tough Western Oregon team and we were fortunate to come out on top," said UC San Diego head coach Eric Olen. "We had contributions from everyone and multiple guys stepped up and made big plays down the stretch."

Tyrell Roberts paced UC San Diego with a game-high 20 points on 9-for-18 shooting. The guard also had four rebounds and two assists.

Also finishing with 10 or more points were Scott Everman (14), Chris Hansen (13), and Christian Bayne (11). Hansen had eight rebounds and four assists while Bayne registered six assists, one short of his career best.

The Tritons' starting five (Bayne, Everman, Hansen, Mikey Howell, and Roberts) accounted for all but six of the team's points.

UC San Diego shot just under 50 percent, hitting 27 of its 55 attempts. The team netted 11 three-pointers, the ninth time in 11 games it has drained at least 10 from long range. The Tritons held a 36-29 advantage in rebounding and turned the ball over just eight times.

The Wolves led by six points at the 4:25 mark of the opening half. Tied 28-28 with 1:41 until the break, Jeremy Johnson hit a three that put the Tritons ahead for good.

UC San Diego opened the second half with an 11-5 run that featured back-to-back-to-back treys by Roberts, Hansen, and Everman. Western Oregon chipped away and cut its deficit to a mere two points (58-56) with just over five minutes left in regulation. However, the Tritons scored the next 10 points, six of those coming from consecutive three-pointers by Hansen and Bayne.

Cameron Cranston had 12 points for the Wolves and Riley Hawken grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

UC San Diego topped Hawai'i Pacific, 72-49, Sunday.

Chaminade made its way to the title game by defeating Western Washington and Dallas Baptist.
