CARSON, Calif. — The No. 9 University of California San Diego women’s basketball team continued its undefeated start to the season, earning a road victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills, 89-73, on Saturday afternoon.

“The overall goal was to be really aggressive,” said junior forward Haleigh Hatfield, who finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. “We knew (Cal State Dominguez Hills) is a really aggressive team.

“We saw things we haven’t faced a lot, like their pressure, so the goal was to out-grit them.”

UC San Diego (13-0, 9-0 CCAA) has now won 18-consecutive road contests and 16-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road games.

In addition, the Tritons have been victorious in 19-straight conference games overall and 33 of their last 34 in conference play.

Junior forward Mikayla Williams led the way with 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting along with six rebounds, senior guard Kayla Sato scored 12 points and freshman guard Julia Macabuhay had a solid all-around game with 10 points, a career-high nine rebounds and six assists.

After leading by one after the first quarter, the Tritons outscored the Toros 28-16 in the second period.

Freshman guard Brianna Claros began the run with a 3-pointer off an assist from Sato, and Hatfield’s offensive rebound and bucket made it 27-21 just a minute into the second quarter.

Junior Stephanie Moore followed with a 3-pointer and Sato’s jumper extended UC San Diego’s lead to nine, forcing a timeout by Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Consecutive threes by junior guard Sydney Sharp and senior guard Joleen Yang capped off an 18-5 Triton run, pushing the lead to 40-26 with 6:15 to go before halftime.

The Tritons return to action on the road next Saturday, Jan. 12, when they take on Stanislaus State beginning at 5:30 p.m.
