Hansen Nets 1,000th Career Point in Win vs. Cal State San Marcos

UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Chris Hansen scored his 1,000th career point to lead the 13th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team to a 92-69 conference win against Cal State San Marcos Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.

UC San Diego moved to 15-3 overall on the season and 10-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while San Marcos fell to 4-13 and 1-10.

Hansen entered the game with 991 career points. He scored his first seven of the night on a layup, a three-pointer, and a pair of free throws. With 5:34 remaining in the first half, the redshirt junior center took a pass from Connor Peterson and launched another three that found nothing but net, putting him at 1,001 and making him the sixth Triton to eclipse 1,000 career points during the program's NCAA Division II era (since the 2000-01 season).

The 6'7" Hansen finished his night with a game-high 19 points after going 6-for-8 overall, 5-for-5 from behind the arc, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. He pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds to notch his eighth double-double of the season while also collecting three blocks and an assist in 21 minutes of play.

The Tritons made 19 treys, equaling a Division II program record. They put up 40 attempts from long range. Overall, they made 50 percent of their shots, hitting 32 of 64. The team finished with a season-high 23 assists, six coming from Mikey Howell (San Marcos/San Marcos HS) and four from Gabe Hadley

UC San Diego led by as many as 34 points when Hadley hit a three-pointer to make the score 84-49 with 4:47 remaining in the second half.

It was the fourth time this season that the Tritons scored 90-plus points.

Three other Tritons joined Hansen in double-figures including Tyrell Roberts (18), Hadley (15), and Peterson (11). Roberts and Hadley each drained four three-pointers, while Eric Patton grabbed a career- and game-high 12 rebounds.

Bryce Sloan had 18 points and Darae Elliott had 17 for Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars shot 44 percent (27-62).

The Tritons swept the season series against the Cougars as they won 62-58 in San Marcos on Dec. 1.

First-place UC San Diego plays its next two on the road, traveling to Chico State on Jan. 24 and Humboldt State on Jan. 26.

The Tritons' next home game will be Friday, Jan. 31 against Stanislaus State at 7:30 p.m. It will be Spirit Night, the eagerly-awaited annual event that features several thousand fans packing RIMAC Arena. For complete information, visit the Spirit Night Facebook Event page.
