FULLERTON, Calif. - The No. 18 University of California San Diego women's tennis team came away with a 7-0 loss at future Big West Conference rival Cal State Fullerton at the Titan Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.

The contest served as the dual-match season opener for Cal State Fullerton (1-0), which went a program-best 20-6 en route to its first Big West Championship final a year ago.

After the hosts procured the doubles point by taking two of the three matches, the Tritons were downed in straight sets at all six singles spots.

Fourth-year senior Ashley Chao (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) and third-year partner Becky Chou edged out a 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles over Sarah Nuno and Eira Tobrand. True Triton freshmen Anu Bhadada (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) and Shweta Kumar led 4-1 at No. 3 doubles, but ultimately fell 6-4.

Junior Valeria Corral (San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic HS) came closest in singles, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 4 against Tobrand. Senior Alexandra Weil stormed back from a 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in her second set at No. 2 before succumbing to Nuno, 6-1, 7-5.

"We were outplayed at the top singles spots, but held our own in the bottom half," remarked 40th-year UC San Diego head coach Liz LaPlante. "I'm happy to get the win at No. 1 doubles. We lost a lead at No. 3 doubles, dropping five three-all (40-40 or deuce) points to lose the set. That's a good way to learn about the focus needed on the crucial three-all points."

Fourth-year Triton senior Chloe Wight was unavailable for a second straight exhibition contest due to a slight injury.

UC San Diego rounds out its exhibition slate against a third successive Division I foe this Saturday, Jan. 26, making the shorter trip to crosstown rival San Diego State (1-0). The action at the Aztec Tennis Center begins at 12 p.m. Admission is free, but parking permits are required. Click here for details.
