SAN DIEGO - The No. 18 University of California San Diego women's tennis team fell to crosstown foe San Diego State University, 7-0, in its preseason exhibition finale Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center.

The contest counted for San Diego State, a member of the NCAA Division I and Mountain West Conference, as the Aztecs improved to 2-0.

UC San Diego's No. 1 doubles pair of senior Ashley Chao (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) and junior co-captain Becky Chou produced a nice 6-4 victory over Shakhnoza Khatamova and Jenny Moinard. That result evened up doubles play following a 6-1 Aztec decision at No. 3 over junior Valeria Corral (San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic HS) and freshman Anu Bhadada (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS). The doubles point thus came down to the No. 2 court, where seniors Madison Hale and Alexandra Weil suffered a narrow 7-6 (2) tiebreak defeat.

SDSU took all six singles matchups in straight sets. Chou and Corral kept theirs the closest, going down 6-2, 6-4, and 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

"We had a good win at No. 1 doubles, and this was great practice, getting us ready for Division II competition," remarked Liz LaPlante following her return to her alma mater. LaPlante, a 1979 San Diego State graduate and three-year Aztec student-athlete, is approaching her 40th season in charge at UC San Diego.

Senior Chloe Wight and freshman Shweta Kumar were unavailable for the Tritons.

UC San Diego will be idle next weekend before getting it going for real on Friday, Feb. 8, at home against 13th-ranked Division II West Region rival Azusa Pacific. The action at Northview Tennis Courts on North Campus in La Jolla gets underway with doubles at 12 p.m. Admission is free. Parking permits are required on weekdays.

That contest in fact will mark the beginning of a season-long seven-match homestand for the Tritons that will keep them in La Jolla for all of February.
