13th-Ranked Tritons Dominate at Chico State, 78-57
CHICO, Calif. - Hitting 61 percent of its shots in the first half and holding a 38-25 advantage on the glass, the 13th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team rolled to a 78-57 victory at league rival Chico State Thursday evening at Acker Gymnasium.
Improving its win streak to four games, UC San Diego upped its season record to 16-3 and its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) mark to 11-1 to remain in first place. With its fourth consecutive loss, Chico State fell to 5-9 overall and 4-9 in conference action.
UC San Diego never trailed in the game. The Tritons led 50-27 at halftime, the eighth time this season that the team scored at least 50 points in a half. A three-pointer by guard Tyrell Roberts with just under eight minutes left in the contest put UC San Diego up by 30 points, 70-40, its largest lead of the game.
"It was a really good performance on the road," said UC San Diego head coach Eric Olen. "I thought we played with good spirit. I liked our offensive execution in the first half against a variety of defenses. It's important as we progress to be successful when we see different looks."
Five Tritons hit double figures in points, including forward Scott Everman, who finished with a team-high 15 on five three-pointers in the opening half. He dished out a team-best four assists.
Also totaling at least 10 points were guard Gabe Hadley (13), guard Mikey Howell (San Marcos/San Marcos HS) (12), center Chris Hansen (10), and Roberts (10). Hadley sank a trifecta of treys, Hansen had four blocks, and Howell stole three balls. Guard Christian Bayne led the Tritons with six rebounds while also adding seven points, two assists, a block, and a steal.
UC San Diego made 17 of its 28 shot attempts in the first half, including eight of 16 from behind the three-point arc. The Tritons led 8-4 in offensive rebounds and scored 15 points off of 14 Wildcat turnovers.
Chico State got a game-high 17 points from Malik Duffy. The Wildcats shot 41 percent for the game.
UC San Diego swept the regular season series against Chico State as it took an 84-68 victory in La Jolla on Nov. 24.
The team now makes the long drive to Humboldt State (14-7, 8-5) for a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday, January 26. The Lumberjacks were defeated, 91-72, by Cal State San Marcos Thursday in Arcata. The Tritons topped the 'Jacks by an 85-62 score on Dec. 29 at RIMAC Arena.
