ARCATA, Calif. - For just the second time this season, the 13th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team lost a conference game, falling by a  67-65 score in a thriller at Humboldt State Saturday night.

UC San Diego is now 16-4 overall and 11-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). With nine conference games remaining in the regular season, the Tritons are tied with Cal State East Bay for first place.

With the score even at 65-65 with 50 seconds left in regulation, Humboldt State missed three consecutive layups but grabbed the offensive rebound after each. The Lumberjacks called a timeout with 20 ticks remaining and came back to the floor with possession. Amari Green was able to sink a jumper with four seconds left, which proved to be the game-winning shot.

"I'm disappointed we couldn't pull it out, but I'm proud of the way we competed," said UC San Diego head coach Eric Olen. "Humboldt deserves a lot of credit for the way they played and controlled the game."

UC San Diego made 45.1 percent (23-51) of its shots overall and 38.5 percent (10-26) of its three-point attempts. The Tritons were out-rebounded 34-26, including 10-5 on the offensive glass.

Christian Bayne had 19 points, Tyrell Roberts finished with 18, and Chris Hansen had 10. Bayne and Roberts each netted three three-pointers and Bayne grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.

The Lumberjacks, which shot 50 percent, led for a majority of the game. The Tritons' largest advantage of the night was three points, and that came when Hansen hit a three-pointer to open the night's scoring. HSU led by as many as nine points, including early in the second half.

At the 10:29 mark of the second the 'Jacks were ahead by five, 49-44. However, UC San Diego reeled off seven straight points, five of those coming from Scott Everman, to go up 51-49.

At 7:59, Green hit a jumper to kick off a 6-0 run by Humboldt.

The Tritons put together another comeback bid late in the half. With 3:13 remaining and the Lumberjacks ahead by four (61-57), Roberts drilled a three to get UC San Diego back within a point. Following a jumper and a layup by HSU that put it up by five, Bayne scored the next five points of the game on a three and a jumper to tie it at 65-65, but those would be the final points that the Tritons would score.

Humboldt State, which improved to 15-7 on the season and 9-5 in conference play, was led by Justin Everett's 22 points. Calvin Young II recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards.

The Tritons and Lumberjacks split the regular season series. On December 29 in La Jolla, UC San Diego rolled to an 85-62 victory.

"We need to keep getting better and working to make sure we are playing at a high level every time we get a chance," said Olen.

One of the biggest Triton celebrations of the year takes place next week with the UC San Diego campus coming alive for its annual Spirit Night at RIMAC Arena.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, January 31, and takes place around UC San Diego's CCAA doubleheader against Stanislaus State. The women's game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff with the men’s contest starting at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Activities scheduled to feature at this year’s Spirit Night include various pre-game and in-game competitions between students representing the university’s six undergraduate colleges, a pre-game tailgate, and various giveaways for UC San Diego students in attendance. There will also be in-game promotions and activities geared for everyone at the games.

Spirit Night will also serve as the third and final event of a special student promotion - Triton Trifecta.
