Tritons Get First Home Win with Sweep Over Grand Canyon
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Wyatt Harrison had a match-high 17 kills to lead the University of California San Diego men's volleyball team to its first home win of the season, a 3-0 sweep of Grand Canyon Saturday at RIMAC Arena.
Scores of the non-conference match were 25-20, 27-25, and 25-19. UC San Diego moved to 3-5 on the season while GCU fell to 6-4.
Harrison was solid on offense, finishing with a .394 hitting percentage after collecting the 17 kills with just four errors in 33 attempts. It was the sophomore's fourth time this year accumulating at least 10 kills.
Freshman Berkeley Miesfeld (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) had seven kills, two aces, four digs, and three blocks. Junior Connor Walbrecht had 29 assists and a team-high six digs, while redshirt sophomore Vlad Pesic had four blocks.
As a team, the Tritons hit .287 with 40 kills and 15 errors in 87 swings. They out-blocked the 'Lopes 8.0 to 6.5 and had four service aces while keeping their errors from the line to just nine. In the third set, they hit .393 (13-2-28).
For Grand Canyon, Christian Janke led with 15 kills. Alex Shmelev had four blocks and Cole Udall had a match-high eight digs. The 'Lopes hit .253 (36-16-79).
UC San Diego continues its non-Big West Conference slate on Tuesday, January 29 when it hosts Princeton at 6 p.m.
