Tritons Come Up Short Against No. 13 Azusa Pacific in Home Opener, 4-2
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's tennis team was downed by 13th-ranked rival Azusa Pacific University, 4-2, in its home opener Friday at Northview Tennis Courts.
UC San Diego falls to 0-2, while Azusa Pacific moves to 2-0. The Cougars had ended the Tritons' season in each of the past two years in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Championship. APU has now won five straight overall in the series, with three meetings in 2018. The sides will face off again in Azusa on April 12.
After surrendering the doubles point, the Tritons got straight-set wins in singles from sophomore Neil Tengbumroong at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3, and junior Sreeganesh Manoharan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) at No. 6, 6-2, 6-3.
Those two results pulled the home side even on the day at 1-1 and 2-2, respectively. Jesse Haas then closed out Triton senior Richard Han, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5, and Ryan Nuno got past true freshman Sahm Irvine, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2, to clinch victory for APU. Zach Ermert's (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) matchup at No. 4 was then halted with the redshirt freshman down a set (7-6) and even at 3-3 in the second.
Junior UC San Diego captain Marc Isaia lost in straight sets to Jakob Schnaitter, ranked ninth nationally in Division II and No. 1 in the West Region, 6-1, 6-2.
Haas and Schnaitter had started the day by teaming up to race past Ermert and Manoharan at No. 1 doubles, 6-1. Isaia and Tengbumroong kept things close until the end at No. 2, before going down 7-5 to Nuno and Leyton Bohren. Irvine and junior Marius Ruh, in his season debut, were down 5-4 at No. 3 when they stopped as the doubles point went to the Cougars.
UC San Diego makes the short trip across town to take on another fierce Division II West Region foe in city rival Point Loma on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The action at PLNU Tennis Courts gets underway at 3:30 p.m., with a pay-per-view live stream available. Parking and admission are free.
APU, UC San Diego and Point Loma are second, fourth and seventh, respectively, in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Region poll.
