No. 2 Tritons Come Out Hot in Victory Over Cal State LA, 73-48
LA JOLLA, Calif. — The University of California San Diego took care of business at home on Saturday evening, defeating Cal State LA, 73-48, at RIMAC Arena.
The Tritons jumped out to an 18-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter and led by 29 points at halftime, allowing only 11 points by intermission.
UC San Diego (22-0, 18-0 CCAA) continued its marvelous season, winning its 32nd-consecutive regular-season contest, its 28th-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season game and the 42nd in its last 43 regular-season conference games.
The Tritons stand 2.5 games ahead of Cal Poly Pomona in the conference standings with four to play. A road victory over Sonoma State on Thursday, Feb. 21, will clinch the program’s fourth-straight CCAA regular-season championship.
Junior forward Mikayla Williams led UC San Diego on Saturday with 19 points and 10 rebounds, junior guard Sydney Sharp made four 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, while redshirt freshman guard Emily Cangelosi scored eight points off the bench.
The Tritons held Cal State LA to just 17 percent shooting (5-of-29) in the first half, while UC San Diego came out hot, shooting 50 percent from the field and 7-for-15 from 3-point range in the game’s first 20 minutes.
Following Thursday’s road game at Sonoma State, UC San Diego wraps up its regular-season road schedule at San Francisco State on Saturday, Feb. 23.
