Tritons Down Sonoma State, Clinch Home CCAA Quarterfinal

UC San Diego

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Four Tritons scored in double figures to lead the University of California San Diego men's basketball team to an 80-65 win on the road at Sonoma State Thursday night.

The victory, coupled with a Humboldt State loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday, secured UC San Diego (19-7, 14-5) a top-four finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and a home quarterfinal in the upcoming conference tournament.

Christian Bayne led all players with 18 points. The senior guard went 6-for-8 from the field with a pair of three-pointers while also adding four assists and three rebounds for the Tritons.

Also finishing north of 10 points were Chris Hansen (14), Gabe Hadley (13), and Tyrell Roberts (11). Hadley and Scott Everman each sank three treys, accounting for six of UC San Diego's 15. Hansen grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and Mikey Howell (San Marcos/San Marcos HS) dished out seven assists, one shy of his career-high.

Overall, UC San Diego shot 48.3 percent (28-58), which included a solid 56.7 percent (17-30) clip in the first half. The Tritons totaled 20 points off of 11 SSU turnovers.

Howell hit a three-pointer to open the game's scoring and UC San Diego stayed ahead the rest of the way.

The Tritons led by as many as 18 points, their largest advantage of the game, in the opening stanza. With 1:32 remaining until the intermission, Martin Tombe netted a three to make it 43-25. That basket capped an 8-1 run by UC San Diego.

The Tritons maintained a double-digit lead until Mason Phillips made a long-range shot to get the Seawolves back within nine, 60-51, with 8:54 left in regulation. UC San Diego responded with an Everman three and the Tritons led by at least 10 until the final horn.

Sonoma State (8-16, 6-13) got 14 points and six boards from Jordan Hickman, both team-highs. The Seawolves made 46.2 percent (24-54) of their shots.

UC San Diego plays its final regular season road game Saturday at San Francisco State. The tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Swamp.

The eight-team CCAA Tournament begins with quarterfinals at campus sites on Tuesday, March 5. The semifinals and final are slated for March 8-9 at Cal State East Bay in Hayward.
