NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s rowing team took part in a scrimmage with Orange Coast College (OCC) in Newport Beach on Saturday morning.

Head Coach Zach Johnson discussed the intent of the scrimmage, which is the team’s final pre-season preparation before the regular season begins.

“It will be nice to do some work with another good program who we last saw at the Henley Regatta last season,” Johnson said heading into the scrimmage. “It will give us a good idea of where we are at this point in the season finally doing work with another team next to us!”

OCC is a familiar competitor with close ties to the Tritons. Not only have the two participated in the same competitions, like the Henley Royal Regatta, but the community college has also produced a number of Triton student-athletes. Four current Tritons are former OCC students: Daniel Amado, Andrew Garrow, Tanner Godfrey, Ken Ponchak, and Caleb O’Neil.

The two teams competed in a series of timed races during their scrimmage. Johnson was pleased with the Tritons’ performance as they raced the Pirates.

“Overall our depth showed, as we did extremely well in the third and fourth boat, and performed well as a whole team,” Johnson said. “It will help us a lot going into next week and the start of the season.”

On March 2, UC San Diego will return to Newport Beach, opening its season at the UC Cup Challenge.
