Shannon Produces Again but Tritons Swept at No. 8 Stanford
STANFORD, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's volleyball team was defeated in straight sets by eighth-ranked Stanford Saturday night at Maples Pavilion. Scores were 25-18, 25-17, and 25-19.
UC San Diego dropped to 6-10 on the season, while Stanford won its fourth-consecutive match to improve to 11-5. The Tritons went 1-1 on their trip to Northern California as they defeated UC Santa Cruz, 3-0, Friday.
Collin Shannon continued his strong play, leading UC San Diego with 13 kills. The sophomore opposite hitter has totaled double-digit kills in his last five matches. He hit .360 Saturday with four errors in 25 attack attempts.
UC San Diego hit .221 (36-17-86), while Stanford hit a healthy .478 (39-6-69). The Cardinal held advantages in digs (27-16), blocks (5-2), and aces (3-2) and sided-out at 80 percent compared to the Tritons' 58 percent.
Jordan Ewert paced the Cardinal with a match-high 14 kills and Kyle Dagostino led all players with eight digs.
Following this week's two non-conference matches, UC San Diego returns to Big West play next week, traveling to fifth-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Friday, March 1. The 7 p.m. contest is the only one of the week for the Tritons.
