Hayden Hui Leads Field at Bay Area Invitational
SAN FRANCISCO - Hayden Hui moved into the lead and the University of California San Diego men's golf team is fifth as the Bay Area Invitational's second round wrapped up Monday at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
Hui, a junior, fired a one-under par 71 Monday to go along with the two-under 70 he shot in Sunday's opening round. He is atop the 73-player field with a 141, three-under par, with 18 holes of play remaining in the event. Hui was tied for third following round one.
UC San Diego also moved up in the standings, improving one spot to fifth. The Tritons shot a 292 Monday, topping Sunday's 297 by five strokes. Their 589 total is 13-over par.
Also on course for UC San Diego are junior Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) (tied for 30th, 75-74--149), freshman Elliot Bunyaviroch (tied for 30th, 79-70--149), junior Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (tied for 46th, 75-77--152), and sophomore Ryan Vaughan (tied for 61st, 77-79--156). Bunyaviroch's 70 was the lowest of any Triton on Tuesday.
Concordia Portland leads the 14-team field with a 578. Sonoma State is in second with a 580, Cal State East Bay is third with a 584, and sixth-ranked Western Washington is fourth with a 587.
Hui holds a one-stroke lead over two other competitors - Riley Killup and Luke Travins, both from Concordia Portland. Just six players are currently under par.
Hui's round on Monday included four birdies, 11 pars, and three bogeys. Over 36 holes, he has made seven birdies and 25 pars.
UC San Diego players have recorded 121 pars, the most of any team. Navigato is tied with two others players with a tournament-best 2.88 average on par-3 holes.
The 6,845-yard Harding Park course played to a 75.12 stroke average Monday.
The 54-hole Bay Area Invitational, hosted by Academy of Art, concludes Tuesday with a third round scheduled for a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The Tritons will be playing with British Columbia, Holy Names, and Saint Martin's.
