Tritons Swept at No. 5 UC Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's volleyball team ran into a red hot UC Santa Barbara squad Friday and was defeated in straight sets at Robertson Gymnasium. Scores of the Big West Conference match were 25-17, 25-13, and 25-21 in favor of the Gauchos, who are ranked fifth nationally.
UC San Diego fell to 6-11 overall and 0-4 in the Big West. UC Santa Barbara won its 11th-consecutive match to move to 14-3 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
The Tritons hit .162 for the match with 23 kills and 12 errors in 68 attack attempts. On the other side of the net, the Gauchos attacked at .400 with 37 kills and just 11 errors in 65 swings. UCSB hit .579 (14-3-19) in the first set and followed with a scorching .667 (11-1-15) in the second. UC San Diego's best attack came in set one as it swung at .278 (8-3-18).
UC Santa Barbara also held advantages in service aces (11-4), blocks (5.5-4.0), and digs (25-16).
Wyatt Harrison led the Tritons in kills with seven, while Gabe Avillion followed with six. Avillion hit .500 (6-0-12) and he and Harrison each finished with two block assists. Collin Shannon, the reigning Big West Player of the Week, had four kills, a team-best four digs, a solo block, and a service ace. Splitting setting duties, Blake Crisp and Connor Walbrecht both had 11 assists.
UCSB's Ryan Wilcox led all players with 10 kills, while Casey McGarry registered a double-double with 31 assists to go along with a match-high 10 digs.
The Gauchos also swept the Tritons on February 15 in La Jolla.
UC San Diego plays its fourth-consecutive road match on March 8 at Concordia (6 p.m.) before hosting Stanford on March 9 (7 p.m.).
