Undefeated! No. 2 Tritons Complete Unbeaten Season With Win Over Cal State East Bay
LA JOLLA, Calif. — Undefeated.
That’s what the No. 2-ranked University of California San Diego women’s basketball team accomplished on Saturday night, knocking off Cal State East Bay, 77-69, to finish the 2018-19 regular season unblemished.
UC San Diego (26-0, 22-0 CCAA) becomes the first team to complete California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play unbeaten since Cal Poly Pomona in 1991-92. In addition, the Tritons are the first-ever CCAA team to finish the regular season undefeated.
The Tritons will be the No. 1-seed in next week’s CCAA Tournament, and will play host to No. 8-seeded San Francisco State in the quarterfinals at RIMAC Arena on Tuesday, March 5 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The winner advances to the semifinals against either No. 4 Cal State San Marcos or No. 5 Cal State Dominguez Hills on March 8, which will be held at Cal State East Bay’s Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward, Calif.
UC San Diego worked hard to cap off its regular season on a high note, as the Tritons saw their 17-point lead with eight minutes remaining cut to six with 36 second left to play.
But two late free throws by senior guard Joleen Yang followed by a defensive stop at the other end ensured the Tritons match the program’s all-time best start to a season, sharing the 26-0 start with the 2011-12 team.
Junior forward Mikayla Williams led the way with 20 points, six rebounds and five blocks, junior guard Sydney Sharp added 17 points with five rebounds, while senior guard Kayla Sato finished with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Tritons took a commanding 27-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, and held a 42-20 advantage at halftime. Cal State East Bay (13-5, 10-12) fought its way back into the game scored 47 points in the second half, but UC San Diego made 11-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter to clinch the win.
