Tritons Third After First Round of SoCal Intercollegiate
SANTEE, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's golf team sits in third place of 16 squads as the opening round of the 69th SoCal Intercollegiate was played Monday at Carlton Oaks in San Diego's East County.
The second round of the tournament, which is hosted by UC San Diego, was well underway before being suspended due to darkness. Several teams have one or two holes remaining, which will be played Tuesday starting at 6:45 a.m. The third and final round will follow.
UC San Diego totaled a 292 (+4) on the par-72, 7,179-yard course.
Junior Hayden Hui is the top Triton, currently in a tie for seventh place among 87 competitors. He shot a 71 (-1) in Monday's round.
Sophomore Ryan Vaughan is also in the top-15. He enters Tuesday in a tie for 14th after firing a 73 (+1).
Five Tritons are playing as individuals and do not figure in the team's scoring. Freshman Jared Gross (75, +3) is tied for 38th, freshman Sergi Mata De La Barata Barcons (77, +5), junior Jacob Johnson (77, +5), and junior Connell Kilpatrick (77, +5) are tied for 53rd, and freshman Ethan Chen (81, +9) is tied for 78th. Mata De La Barata Barcons is playing in his first collegiate event, while Kilpatrick is playing for the first time this season.
Stanislaus State leads the field as the lone team under par with a 287 (-1). Sonoma State is second with a 288 (even).
Matthew Moss of Cal State San Marcos is atop the individual leader board after carding a 68 (-4). Three players are tied for second, just a single stroke behind Moss. Nine golfers shot under par Monday.
UC San Diego is coming off a fifth-place finish at last week's Bay Area Invitational. Hui was the top finisher for the Tritons at that event, placing fourth.
