History Made! No. 2 Tritons Top SF State to Set Program's All-Time Best Record, 27-0
LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Tritons picked the perfect time to play their best game of the season.
It wasn’t quite perfect, but you can’t say the same about their record.
The No. 2 University of California San Diego women’s basketball team was sharp from start to finish on Tuesday evening, defeating San Francisco State 87-36 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament quarterfinals at RIMAC Arena.
The Tritons have advanced to the CCAA Tournament semifinals, where they’ll take on Cal State San Marcos (15-8) on Friday at Pioneer Gymnasium on the campus of Cal State East Bay.
With the win, UC San Diego (27-0) set a new record for best start to a season in program history. The 2011-12 Tritons began the season 26-0 before suffering a one-point road loss to Humboldt State.
Game No. 27 was no such problem for the 2018-19 edition, as UC San Diego led by 12 at the end of the first quarter and limited SF State (10-18) to just five points in the second to take a 48-18 halftime advantage.
The Tritons held the Gators to just nine points in both the third and fourth periods, finishing the game with a 47-33 rebounding margin, a 44-16 edge in points in the paint and forcing 17 turnovers.
Junior forward Mikayla Williams led the charge with 23 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. The trio of senior Kayla Sato, senior Joleen Yang junior Sydney Sharp scored 12 points apiece, as Sato also finished with four rebounds and four assists.
UC San Diego is 2-0 against Cal State San Marcos this season, defeating the Cougars by two, 54-52, in San Marcos, Calif., on Dec. 1, and knocking off CSUSM at home in double overtime, 68-67, on Jan. 19.
