Tritons Will Play for Third-Straight CCAA Tournament Title Saturday
HAYWARD, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's basketball team will play for its third-consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament championship after defeating Cal State East Bay, 72-68, Friday in a semifinal at Pioneer Gymnasium.
Second-seeded UC San Diego will face top-seeded and 20th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona in Saturday's title game, which tips at 7:35 p.m. in Hayward. The Broncos out-lasted Cal State LA, 102-99, in a four-overtime thriller in Friday's late semifinal to advance.
UC San Diego led for most of the game. A three-pointer by Jeremy Johnson at the 12:06 mark of the first half put the Tritons up 10-8 and they never trailed again. Their largest lead was 18 when a jumper by Tyrell Roberts with 9:39 left in the second half made the score 64-46. The Pioneers made it interesting by getting back within a single point when a 20-3 run made it 67-66 with 3:51 on the clock. However, Christian Bayne responded by hitting a three at 1:41 and the Tritons held on from there.
The Tritons, who rank second nationally with their 12.9 three-pointers per game average, hit 14 today. They held a 36-29 lead in rebounds, which included a 10-5 edge on the offensive glass.
Bayne finished with a team-high 15 points while Roberts and Mikey Howell each had 13. Chris Hansen was a force on the boards, pulling down a game-best 12 rebounds. Hansen had a block in the game which gave him 33 for the year, tying the program's Division II single season mark of 33.
It was UC San Diego's second victory against Cal State East Bay in a week as the Tritons took a 79-57 win on March 2 in La Jolla on the final day of the regular season.
UC San Diego, the two-time defending CCAA Tournament champion, is 0-1 against Cal Poly Pomona this season. The Tritons and Broncos met for the 2018 tourney title with UC San Diego battling for a 68-66 win.
The tournament winner earns an automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Division II West Regional.
