No. 14 Tritons Knock Off Fresno Pacific in WWPA Opener, 11-5
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sophomore Tera Richardson scored a career-high three goals with an assist and two steals to lift the No. 14 University of California San Diego women's water polo team to a home victory over Fresno Pacific, 11-5, in the Tritons Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) opener Friday night at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
Senior Carly Innis added two goals, while senior Riley Heiduk, sophomore Robyn Carter, senior Maddy Wieseler, and the freshmen trio of Lizzie Hansen, Maddie Bockman and Georgia Ransone each scored one goal apiece.
UC San Diego (8-11, 1-0 WWPA) jumped out to a 4-2 lead after one quarter of play, before outscoring Fresno Pacific (3-13) 3-0 in the second period to take a 7-2 halftime advantage.
The Tritons extended their lead to five after Carter's five-meter penalty-shot goal to close the third quarter, before Richardson's third goal of the game early in the fourth period made it 10-5 with 6:52 left to play.
UC San Diego continues its busy weekend on Saturday, beginning play at San Diego State's Aztec Invitational. The Tritons take on No. 20 CSUN at 9:15 a.m., before facing Azusa Pacific at 1 p.m.
