Tritons Capture Fourth-Straight City Championships Title Against USD
MISSION BAY, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s rowing team captured its fourth-consecutive City Championships title as it raced the University of San Diego (USD) at Mission Bay this morning. In the past 15 years of the longstanding tradition, the Tritons have taken home 13 titles.
The Varsity 8 definitively took the first two of three races with the Toreros. UC San Diego and USD were even early on in the first race, but the Tritons pulled ahead to take a lead, which they kept for the remainder of the race. The Tritons took control again during the second race, coming away with another victory.
In race three, the UC San Diego Varsity 8 had to deal with strong wake. The Tritons powered through to make it a close race regardless, finishing around the same time as the Toreros.
“I thought it was a good race,” said Head Coach Zach Johnson. “USD is definitely doing well and they’re very fit… For the most part, we executed what we wanted to do for the day.”
Next up, the Tritons will host the UC San Diego Invitational. The two-day regatta will take place from March 30-31 in Chula Vista.
