UC San Diego Swept by No. 8 Stanford

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's volleyball team hit just .128 as it was defeated in straight sets by eighth-ranked Stanford Saturday at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 25-18, 25-19, and 25-20.

UC San Diego dropped to 6-13 and Stanford improved to 13-7. It was the second win for the Cardinal over the Tritons this season.

UC San Diego had 31 kills and made 20 errors in 86 attack attempts.

Collin Shannon led the Tritons with a match-high 11 kills and hit .320 (11-3-25). Shannon and Vlad Pesic each totaled three blocks, while Xander Jimenez had six kills and Ryan Lew had a match-high eight digs.

UC San Diego scored the first two points in the opening set, but Stanford then won 12 of the next 16 points to take a 12-6 lead. Trailing 21-15, the Tritons rallied to take three-consecutive points to get back within three, but the Cardinal closed it out by winning the next four points.

The second set saw 10 tie scores as UC San Diego hit .242, its highest of the match. A Shannon kill put the Tritons up 17-16, but it was all Stanford from there as the visitors rallied to win seven-straight points to bump the score to 23-17 in favor of the Cardinal.

Behind 16-10 in the third set, UC San Diego went on a 4-0 run to get back in it. The Tritons closed the gap to a single point on three occasions, the latest at 20-19 when Shannon put down another kill. Stanford then turned it on and took five of the final six points to put the match away.

Stanford hit .387 (38-9-75) on the night and out-blocked UC San Diego 10-5. Jordan Ewert finished with 11 kills and hit .588. Six Cardinal player had multiple blocks with Chris Moore leading the way with four.

UC San Diego hosts non-conference opponent Lindenwood (7-13) on Tuesday, March 12, 6 p.m. at RIMAC Arena. The match will be broadcast live by ESPN3.
