Mikayla Williams Earns Academic All-America First-Team Honors
AUSTIN, Texas — University of California San Diego women’s basketball junior forward Mikayla Williams has been named to the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division II First Team, the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday.
Williams has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team in each of the last two seasons before earning this year’s All-America honor. In addition, Williams is a two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Academic selection.
A native of Meath Park, Sask., Canada, Williams is majoring in public health at Roosevelt College with a 3.89 cumulative grade-point-average.
The junior forward was named CCAA Player of the Year on March 7 and earned CCAA Tournament MVP honors on March 10.
Williams led the CCAA in scoring with 20.1 points per game, as well as field-goal percentage (.552), while finishing second in free-throw percentage (.828) and fifth in rebounding (10.4).
A three-time CCAA Player of the Week, Williams scored a career-high 36 points in a neutral-site victory over Hawai’i Pacific on Nov. 10, posted career-highs of 18 rebounds and six blocks in a double-overtime win against Cal State San Marcos on Jan. 19 and eclipsed 1,000 career points in a road victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Jan. 5.
Williams was at her best when it mattered most this past weekend, lifting the Tritons to the CCAA Tournament championship. The junior scored 21 points — including 12 in the fourth quarter —with eight rebounds in a semifinal victory over Cal State San Marcos, before exploding for 26 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the tournament final against Cal Poly Pomona.
No. 2-ranked UC San Diego (29-0), the CCAA Tournament and regular-season champion, returns to action this weekend as it hosts the 2019 NCAA West Regional March 15-18 at RIMAC Arena.
