Outstanding Season Ends with Regional Semifinal Loss to No. 6 Point Loma
SAN DIEGO - The University of California San Diego men's basketball team made just 37 percent of its shots and suffered a season-ending, 73-50 defeat to sixth-ranked Point Loma Saturday in an NCAA Division II West Regional semifinal game at Golden Gymnasium.
Fourth-seeded UC San Diego, which came in riding a season-long, eight-game win streak, concludes its outstanding 2018-19 campaign at 26-8.
UC San Diego hit 20 of its 54 shots overall and went 7-for-25 (28 percent) from behind the 3-point line. The Tritons were 12-for-27 (44.4 percent) in the opening half, but went 8-for-27 (29.6 percent) in the second.
Point Loma (28-4), which won its eighth-straight game, got 27 points and 11 rebounds from guard Daulton Hommes, the 2018-19 PacWest Conference and D2CCA West Region Player of the Year. Hommes was 10-for-17 from the floor with five 3-pointers.
The Sea Lions never trailed in the game.
The Tritons were playing in their fifth Division II regional tournament since the 2000-01 season.
UC San Diego's strong season included the team's third-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament championship and its second conference regular season title. Hansen was named the CCAA Player of the Year and a D2CCA All-West Region First Team selection. Bayne and Roberts joined Hansen on the All-CCAA First Team.
The Tritons were ranked as high as No. 6 in the D2SIDA National Poll and No. 7 in the NABC National Poll during the year.
