SAN DIEGO - University of California San Diego basketball standouts Christian Bayne and Sydney Sharp have been named Stars of the Month for February by the San Diego Sports Association.

A junior guard, Sharp had an amazing month, averaging 17.4 points with 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting 54 percent (29-of-53) from 3-point range. The Tritons went 7-0 during the stretch behind Sharp’s hot shooting and won their fourth-consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season championship. Sharp’s month was highlighted by a 26-point, five-assist performance against second-place Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 7, and a 22-point, five-rebound effort in the CCAA-clinching win at Sonoma State on Feb. 21.

Bayne averaged 22.7 points, 3.0 three-pointers, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 59 percent (55-94) overall and a perfect 100 percent (28-28) from the free throw line, all team-highs, over seven games in February. The senior guard was second on the squad in rebounding (5.1), assists (3.1), and three-point percentage (.512, 21-41). Bayne finished with a double-digit point total in six of seven games and netted over 30 points twice, including a career-high 33 in a win against league rival Cal State Dominguez Hills. He pulled down nine rebounds twice, matching a career-best. Bayne was named the CCAA Player of the Week on Feb. 26 after he took over as the league’s leading scorer. The Tritons clinched a CCAA Tournament berth and a home quarterfinal during the month.

It was Bayne's second Star of the Month honor as he won it in February of 2018 as well.

UC San Diego's women finished their season at 30-1 and are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. The Triton men ended with a 26-8 record and were ranked as high as No. 6 nationally. Both teams won CCAA regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II West Regionals.

Bayne and Sharp make it four Tritons named as a Star of the Month for the 2019 calendar year:
Tina Reuter, women's swimming & diving (January)
Mikayla Williams, women's basketball (January)
Christian Bayne, men's basketball (February)
Sydney Sharp, women's basketball (February)
