UC San Diego Routs Quincy 7-0 to Begin Midwest Trip

UC San Diego

QUINCY, Ill. - The University of California San Diego found little resistance from Quincy University, winning 7-0, in men's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon.

With a second straight victory, UC San Diego improved to 6-8. Quincy, a fellow NCAA Division II institution, fell to 6-7. It was likely the first-ever meeting between the programs. The Tritons are on their recently-added Spring Break trip to the Midwest, with Tuesday's result marking their first 7-0 shutout of 2019.

In doubles, freshman Sahm Irvine and junior Marius Ruh made the quickest work of their opponents at No. 3, 6-1. They were followed soon after by junior Sreeganesh Manoharan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) and sophomore Neil Tengbumroong at No. 1, 6-3, to clinch the day's initial point. It was Tengbumroong's first win in the No. 1 doubles slot of his college career. Redshirt freshman Zach Ermert (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) and senior Richard Han were 6-2 victors at No. 2 for the sweep.

UC San Diego did not drop a set in singles. Manoharan (6-0, 6-1) and Han (6-2, 6-1) were off the court the fastest at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively. Ruh's convincing 6-0, 6-1, defeat of Patrick Anderson at No. 5 served as the match clincher.

Tengbumroong knocked off Brenden Everhart, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 for his team-leading eighth singles win, and then Irvine notched his team-best third success in the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-3, over fellow freshman Samuele Constestabile from Italy. The contest was over after Ermert got past Dane Mechali at No. 3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, for his second singles triumph in succession.

UC San Diego concludes this quick trip on Wednesday, March 27, at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. The action at the Truman Tennis Courts gets underway with doubles at 1 p.m. PT (3 p.m. CT). Seventh-year Triton head coach Timmer Willing is a 1993 graduate of Truman State. His team returns home on Thursday.

Tuesday's victory was the 80th dual-match win for Willing at the UC San Diego helm.
