No. 39 Tritons Win Third Match in Four Days This Week, 7-0 Again at Dominican

UC San Diego

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The No. 39 University of California San Diego women's tennis team blanked a second straight opponent to open its Northern California road trip, topping Dominican University of California 7-0 Thursday at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.

With a third consecutive victory, UC San Diego moved to 7-5. Dominican dropped to 3-9. The Tritons had also defeated the Penguins, 8-1, at home last season on March 4. They shut out another Division II foe, Holy Names, on Wednesday in Oakland, and have now won three matches over four days to begin their Spring Break.

UC San Diego's fourth-year doubles partnership of co-captain Madison Hale and Alexandra Weil were initial winners on the No. 2 court, 6-2. Ashley Chao (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) and Becky Chou, and Shweta Kumar and Chloe Wight, were both 6-1 victors at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.

Kumar, a true freshman, skunked Alexandria Rogers, 6-0, 6-0, to get singles going at No. 6. Chou rolled past Michelle Li, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3, marking a team-leading ninth singles victory for the 2018 All-American and current junior co-captain.

Junior Valeria Corral (San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic HS) was back in the singles lineup after taking Wednesday off, and earned a seventh win in a row at No. 4, 6-1, 6-1. That result clinched the match for UC San Diego.

Wight had little trouble with Sierra Shackelford at No. 5, 6-0, 6-2, and Weil defeated Alex Wartenberg at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1. Chao's tilt was closest at No. 1, but she found a way through Taylor Lim in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

UC San Diego concludes this trip on Friday, March 29, playing at future Division I and Big West Conference rival UC Davis. The action begins at 10 a.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center, with the Tritons returning to La Jolla later that night.
