Tritons Complete First Two Sessions of the UC San Diego Invitational
CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s rowing team hosted the first day of the UC San Diego Invitational at the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista today. The Tritons are playing host to Drexel, Gonzaga, Stanford, and USD.
The invitational began with a head-to-head race between UC San Diego’s and Drexel’s Varsity 8 crews. The Tritons turned in a time of 6:08.57, but were edged by Drexel, who finished in 6:02.46.
The UC San Diego Second Varsity 8 also faced Drexel in session one. The Triton squad crossed the finish line in 6:14.19, within three seconds on the Dragons (6:11.21).
In the final race of the morning session, the Tritons’ Third Varsity 8 took on Gonzaga and Stanford. UC San Diego captured a first-place finish with their mark of 6:13.50, while Stanford and Gonzaga followed in second and third, respectively.
Following a break, the teams returned to action for an evening session. This time, the Varsity 8 faced off with Stanford. The Tritons placed second, clocking in at 5:56.68.
The Second Varsity 8 also claimed second during their race with Stanford. With a time of 5:59.26, UC San Diego finished less than three seconds behind Stanford (5:56.54).
After their first-place performance in the morning, the Third Varsity 8 clinched another top performance in the evening. Defeating both Stanford and Gonzaga, the Tritons finished the race in 6:02.79.
The action resumes for session three tomorrow morning. The Triton Varsity 8 will face Gonzaga and USD at 9:10 a.m., the Second Varsity 8 will race Gonzaga at 9:30 a.m., and the Third Varsity 8 will take on Gonzaga and Stanford at 9:40 and 9:50 a.m.
