Tritons Wrap Up UC San Diego Invitational, Third Varsity 8 Defeats Stanford
CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The University of California men’s rowing team wrapped up the second and final day of action at the UC San Diego Invitational on a warm afternoon at Lower Otay Lake. The Tritons played host to Drexel, Gonzaga, Stanford, and USD throughout Saturday and Sunday.
The Varsity 8 was edged out by Gonzaga in the Tritons’ first race of the day, but crossed the finish line ahead of the Toreros. UC San Diego recorded a mark of 6:10.60, following the Bulldogs (6:07.32) by just over three seconds. USD posted a time of 6:16.37 in the race.
In the Second Varsity 8 race, the Tritons and Bulldogs went head-to-head. The two boats were even throughout the race, but Gonzaga’s late move was just enough for them to pull ahead at the very end. The Tritons finished within a second of Gonzaga (6:15.73), clocking a time of 6:16.46.
The Third Varsity 8 finished the weekend by taking on Stanford, as Gonzaga withdrew from the race. Finishing in 6:17.67, the Tritons captured first place and defeated Stanford (6:19.51). The Third Varsity 8 crew placed first in all three of their races over the course of the weekend.
“We’re just still looking for the right combination of lineups,” said Head Coach Zach Johnson about the Tritons. “We’re getting there. We were in all the races and we were very close, but we were having some trouble finding a rhythm in the middle of the races... We’re going to go back to the drawing board this week and move some people around. It shows we have speed to the team, we just need to figure out the right combination.”
Next, the Tritons participate in the renowned San Diego Crew Classic. The competition will take place on April 6 and 7 at Mission Bay
