Tritons' Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 Both Advance to Finals at Kerr Cup, Place Fourth

PHILADELPHIA – The University of California San Diego men’s rowing team competed at the 53rd Kerr Cup Regatta, hosted by Drexel, in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. The Triton Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 crews took part in the regatta, both earning trips to their respective finals.

In the third heat of the Men’s Varsity 8+ race, the Tritons faced off with Franklin and Marshall, La Salle Rowing, Rutgers, St. Mary’s, and No. 1 Yale. Crossing the finish line at 6:07.02, UC San Diego’s second-place finish earned them a spot in the afternoon’s final. The Tritons trailed only top-ranked Yale, who turned in a time of 5:55.91. UC San Diego’s mark was just under 10 seconds faster than the next-best finisher, Rutgers.

Taking part in the Men’s Varsity 8+ Final, UC San Diego was pitted against Bucknell, Colgate, hosts No. 19 Drexel, No. 21 St. Joseph’s, and No. 1 Yale. The Tritons earned fourth with their time of 6:03.71, shaving a little over three seconds off their time from earlier. Yale, Drexel, and St. Joseph’s took the first three slots, respectively.

Competing in the first heat of the Men’s Second Varsity 8+ race, UC San Diego was slated to face Drexel, Rutgers, Temple, Washington College (who ultimately scratched), and West Point. The Tritons recorded a third-place finish, securing them a spot in the finals. With a time of 6:19.53, the Tritons trailed second-place Temple (6:18.12) by just over a second. Drexel (6:13.93) took the top spot in the heat.

In the Men’s Second Varsity 8+ Final, the Tritons took on Bucknell, Drexel, St. Joseph’s, Temple, and Yale. The Tritons finished the race in 6:27.55, taking fourth. It was a repeat of the top four spots from the Men’s Varsity 8+ Final, as Yale, Drexel, and St. Joseph’s claimed first through third, respectively.

Next, the championships portion of UC San Diego’s season begins. First up for the Tritons is the two-day Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships. The competition is scheduled for April 27-28 at Rancho Cordova.
