SAN DIEGO — The Harper Cup is returning to La Jolla.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli recorded a career-high 14 saves to lift the No. 14 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team to a road victory over No. 17 San Diego State, 9-5, Saturday afternoon at Aztec Aquaplex.

It’s the fourth-consecutive season UC San Diego (18-13, 4-0 WWPA) has won the annual rivalry, as the Tritons conclude the regular season with eight wins in their last nine contests overall heading into next weekend's Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship.

Senior Chanel Schilling scored two goals for the Tritons, while sophomore Grace Pevehouse added two goals with two steals to finish the regular season with a team-high 52 goals.

Senior Shelby Stender and sophomores Taylor Onstott, Tera Richardson, Ciara Franke and Sydney Boland also scored one goal apiece.

The Tritons took control of the game in the first half behind timely scoring and spectacular play in the net by Bugelli. Pevehouse got the Tritons on the scoreboard first with a shot past SDSU senior goalkeeper Maura Cantoni to make it 1-0 midway through the first quarter.

Consecutive goals by Boland and Franke to begin the second period pushed UC San Diego’s lead to 3-0, forcing a San Diego State timeout with 6:08 left before halftime. Richardson’s shot into the net off a Cantoni deflection made it 4-0 with 4:13 left in the second quarter.

A five-meter penalty goal by Pevehouse gave the Tritons a commanding 5-goal lead lead with 3:35 remaining in the first half, and Onstotted followed with a high-arching shot giving UC San Diego a 6-0 lead at intermission.

UC San Diego now awaits its next opponent in the WWPA tournament April 26-28 at The SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
