OAKLAND — Senior Chanel Schilling has been named Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Co-Player of the Year, headlining several conference honors for the University of California San Diego women’s water polo team on Wednesday.

Schilling shares the award with Cal State East Bay junior Auriel Bill, while UC San Diego sophomore goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli and sophomore center Ciara Franke join Schilling as All-WWPA First-Team selections.

In addition, sophomores Taylor Onstott and Grace Pevehouse earned WWPA Honorable Mention, while Maddie Bockman was named to the All-Freshman Team.

A native of Newport Beach, Calif., Schilling finished the regular season with 28 goals, 19 steals and drew a team-high 44 exclusions. A two-time ACWPC All-American, Schilling had big performances at crucial times for the Tritons.

The senior center finished with two goals in the Harper Cup road victory over San Diego State and also scored twice against No. 5-ranked Hawai’i in the Tritons’ home opener on Feb. 3.

Bugelli led UC San Diego with 159 saves with a .570 save percentage, posting a 10-9 record as a starter in the net. Similar to Schilling, the La Lolla, Calif., native saved some of her best performances for the biggest stage.

Bugelli recorded a career-high 14 saves in the Harper Cup victory en route to earning the game’s MVP honors, while also tallying 13 saves in a 9-6 home win over No. 16 Long Beach State.

Franke ranks third on the team with 48 goals, 56 total points and is third with 24 steals. A high-school teammate of Bugelli at La Jolla High, Franke scored five goals in two separate games this season, including a win over Brown and against No. T-6 UC Irvine.
