Tritons Knock Off Gannon to Advance to WWPA Championship Final

GENEVA, Ohio — The UC San Diego women’s water polo team moved a step closer to another Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) title on Saturday, defeating Gannon in the WWPA Championship Semifinals, 20-5, at the SPIRE Institute.

No. 1 seed UC San Diego (20-7) will play for its seventh-straight conference title when it takes on No. 2 Fresno Pacific in the WWPA Championship Final on Sunday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. PT.

The Tritons will be appearing in their 10th-consecutive WWPA final, have won 16-straight conference tournament games and 44 conference games in a row overall.

UC San Diego defeated Fresno Pacific, 11-5, in the lone meeting between the two teams on March 8.

Sophomore Grace Pevehouse scored a team-high four goals on Saturday, while fellow sophomore Taylor Onstott recorded a hat trick with three scores. 

Senior Chanel Schilling and junior Jessee Ransone added two goals apiece, with senior Shelby Stender and sophomore Tera Richardson and Sydney Boland each recording two assists. Junior goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher finished with five saves in the net.

UC San Diego broke open a close game in the second quarter by outscoring Gannon in the period, 7-2, behind two goals each from Pevehouse and Schilling. 

After leading by six at halftime, the Tritons added six more goals in the third period to take a 16-5 lead heading into the fourth. UC San Diego finished 4-for-7 in power-play opportunities while holding Gannon to 0-for-5.
