Moving On! Tritons Defeat Wagner in NCAA Opening Round, 12-8

STANFORD, Calif. — The Tritons have cleared their major hurdle. 

Now they’re sprinting ahead for more.

The University of California San Diego women’s water polo team defeated Wagner in the National Collegiate Water Polo Opening-Round contest on Tuesday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center.

With the victory, UC San Diego (22-13) advances to face No. 1-seed USC in the quarterfinals on Friday, May 10, beginning at 12 p.m. PT.

Senior Shelby Stender scored four goals, sophomores Sydney Boland and Grace Pevehouse both scored twice, while sophomore goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli was once again spectacular in the net to earn the win.

Senior Chanel Schilling, junior Jessee Ransone and sophomores Ciara Franke and Taylor Onstott scored one goal apiece.

The Tritons made 12-of-25 shots converted on 4-of-10 power play situations. UC San Diego jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter behind two goals from Stender, one by Franke and one by Pevehouse, and led at halftime, 6-4.

A power-play goal by Stender just 20 seconds into the third quarter pushed the lead back to three, and Pevehouse's five-meter penalty shot goal made it 8-5 entering the fourth. Boland recorded two goals in the final period to help seal the win.
