Another Western Sprints Sweep Earns No. 25 Tritons Spot in IRA National Championships
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The No. 25 University of California San Diego men’s rowing team swept the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8 finals of the Western Sprints Championships this afternoon. This is the second-straight year that the Tritons have won all three races at the Western Sprints, as they also achieved the feat in 2018.
“We’re excited about the sweep,” said Head Coach Zach Johnson. “We’re happy to have done it two years in a row. We would have liked to have had the chance to race against Gonzaga in the Varsity 8 race though. They were disqualified for pulling into the dock late and we disagreed with that decision from the refs. Now, we’ll look at the things we need to improve on as we head towards the IRA National Championships”
The Varsity 8 race was the closest of the day, as the Triton crew came in just ahead of Santa Clara. Crossing the finish line at 5:55.898, UC San Diego defeated Santa Clara (5:57.601) by less than two seconds, while the University of San Diego came in at 6:11.788.
The Tritons topped the Broncos again in the Second Varsity 8 race. This time, UC San Diego claimed first by a margin of over six seconds. With their time of 6:00.318, the Tritons completed the race ahead of both Santa Clara (6:06.405) and Gonzaga (6:11.275).
In the Third Varsity 8 race, the Triton squad won by open water. UC San Diego turned in a mark of 6:08.564, while Gonzaga and Santa Clara trailed well behind. The Bulldogs ultimately finished at 6:20.427 while the Broncos completed the race at 6:22.727.
With the Tritons’ impressive performance, they have earned a spot in the IRA National Championships. The championships will take place in Rancho Cordova from May 31-June 2, with seedings to be announced at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
