RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The No. 25 University of California San Diego men’s rowing team competed in its semi-finals at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship on a sunny, clear Saturday morning. The Varsity 8 took part in Semi-Final 3 on Lake Natoma, while the Second Varsity 8 competed in Semi-Final 4.

In the Varsity 8 Semi-Final 3, UC San Diego was pitted against No. 13 George Washington, No. 16 Pennsylvania No. 18 Oregon State No. 20 Colgate, and No. 21 Drexel. The Tritons had their top time so far on the course, crossing the finish line at 6:03.393 to place sixth. Pennsylvania took the top spot with a time of 5:47.941.

"The Varsity is feeling the pressure and is still looking to step up and perform the way they are capable," said Head Coach Zach Johnson about the squad's performance. "Hopefully tomorrow they can calm down and race to their potential."

In the Second Varsity 8 Semi-Final 4, the Tritons took on No. 13 George Washington, No. 16 Wisconsin, No. 18 Oregon State, No. 20 Stanford. The race had the second smallest margin between the first and last teams of the four Second Varsity 8 semi-finals.

UC San Diego and Stanford were neck and neck as they approached the finish line looking for third place, but the Tritons were ultimately edged out by Stanford by less than a tenth of a second. UC San Diego came away with a time of 5:58.353 finishing fourth, over six seconds ahead of George Washington. Wisconsin turned in the semi-final's top time with a mark of 5:53.273.

"The JV had a fantastic race and had a photo finish to the line," said Johnson. "If they had been in the other semi they would have pulled the second fastest time. An absolutely fantastic race for them and they are looking for a win tomorrow!"

Tomorrow morning, the Third Varsity 8 will be the first Triton crew to compete, as they take part in their Third-Level Final at 9:22 a.m. The Second Varsity 8 crew will follow shortly after, at 9:30 a.m. The Varsity 8 will then wrap up the Tritons’ IRA Championship action in the Fourth-Level Final, which is slated for 10:32 a.m.
