Varsity 4 Wins Petite Final as No. 3 Tritons Close Season at NCAA Championships

UC San Diego

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 3 University of California San Diego women’s rowing team competed in the Varsity 4 and Varsity 8 petite finals at the NCAA Division II Rowing Championships on a clear, breezy Sunday morning. The regatta, which took place at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, was hosted by Indiana Sports Corporation.

The Varsity 4 came out on top in their petite final. The Tritons jumped out to an early lead over Philadelphia-based Jefferson that they preserved throughout the entirety of the race. UC San Diego had a little over a four second advantage at the halfway point, and they continued to increase their lead all the way to the finish line. The Tritons ultimately won by open water, turning in a time of 7:40.841, while Jefferson trailed over 10 seconds behind with a mark of 7:51.998.

The Varsity 8 also got off to a good start, leading Jefferson by just under two seconds at the 500-meter mark, but things took an unfortunate turn early in the race. The Tritons caught a crab, and had to come to almost a dead stop in order to recover.

UC San Diego pushed hard to try to catch the Rams after the miscue, with their times in the final 500 meters of the race within a second of each other, but the Tritons fell short. The Tritons crossed the finish line with a time of 6:46.048, while Jefferson recorded a mark of 6:42.130.

With the final day of the championships, the Tritons’ season comes to a close. With six points, UC San Diego placed sixth overall. This marks the third-straight year that UC San Diego has competed at the NCAA Championships.
