UC San Diego's Final DII Volleyball Schedule Set
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team has announced its 2019 schedule, the team's final competition slate as an NCAA Division II program.
UC San Diego's regular season consists of two tournaments as well as 17 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matches. RIMAC Arena in La Jolla will play host to one of the tourneys and 12 total contests involving the Tritons.
The season kicks off in The Last Frontier as the University of Alaska Anchorage hosts the UAA Invitational Sept. 6-7 at the Alaska Airlines Center. The Tritons will take on Concord, Regis, Biola, and the host Seawolves. It will be UC San Diego's first trip to Alaska since the 2015 NCAA West Regional in Anchorage.
"Everyone’s excited to see Alaska, but we’ll have to cut the sightseeing short because the competition is going to be so tough," said UC San Diego head coach Ricci Luyties. "Alaska is an incredible place to visit and the arena is top notch, so it’s going to be a great place to open the season."
The Tritons then return home to host the D2 West Region Showcase, Sept. 12-14 at RIMAC Arena. Joining UC San Diego in the three-conference tourney will be Academy of Art (PacWest), Concordia Irvine (PacWest), Montana State Billings (Great Northwest), and Saint Martin's (Great Northwest). UC San Diego hosted the D2 West Region Showcase in 2016, which was the last time the team ran a tournament in La Jolla.
"We're fortunate to host the West Region Showcase inside RIMAC arena and it should be a good advantage to have the home crowd behind us when we play four critical matches against regional teams," said Luyties. "The outcomes of the preseason tournaments hold huge implications for the postseason."
Following eight tournament matches, the Tritons jump into CCAA play on Sept. 20 at Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers finished atop the league's North Division in 2018, posting an 11-7 record.
The first home conference tilt comes on Sept. 27 as UC San Diego entertains Cal Poly Pomona, which defeated the Tritons twice in 2018.
Yet another tough test follows the next evening when the team travels to Cal State San Bernardino, the 2018 CCAA champion. The Coyotes, who were ranked No. 1 in the country for five weeks, had just one loss in the league last season. They visit RIMAC Arena on Oct. 12.
Other home matches fall on Oct. 4 (Cal State Monterey Bay), Oct. 18 (Chico State), Oct. 19 (Stanislaus State), Nov. 2 (Cal State San Marcos), Nov. 8 (Cal State LA), and Nov. 9 (Cal State Dominguez Hills).
The regular season concludes on Nov. 16 at crosstown rival Cal State San Marcos.
"The CCAA is loaded again this year and the South Division has no easy matches," said Luyties. "We’ll get tested every week playing good competition and that will make for a really exciting season."
The CCAA Tournament will be contested Nov. 21-23 at Cal State San Bernardino.
With eight new players on the roster in 2018, UC San Diego went 11-12 overall and 7-10 in the CCAA, placing fifth in the league's South Division.
In 2019, the Tritons return three All-CCAA performers in middle blocker Jessica Rieble (first team) and outside hitters Gina Cortesi (honorable mention) and Cindy Tran (honorable mention). In total, nine letter winners are back including liberos Susanna Limb and Alyson Penrose as well as setter Brie Severino, middle blocker Claudia Mathews, and outside hitters Sydney Tekstra and Rebecca Whitney. The roster is filled out by eight first-year Tritons - four transfers and four true freshmen.
Tickets for home matches are $8 for general admission and $5 for seniors (65+), children/youth (4-12), visiting students, military, and UC San Diego faculty/staff/alumni. UC San Diego students and children 3 and under are admitted free. Tickets are available for purchase at the RIMAC Arena box office starting one hour prior to the match. All home matches will be covered by a live video stream as well as live stats.
