Men's Water Polo Splits Day One of Triton Invite

LA JOLLA, CALIF. –  The #9 University of California San Diego men’s water polo team opened the 2019 campaign hosting the Triton invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Tritons handled Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 12-2 to start the day and dropped a defensive battle to #13 UC Irvine 5-4 in the afternoon.


The Tritons return to action tomorrow and will face UC Davis at 9:20 AM and an opponent TBD at 1:50 PM.



Zack Rossman struck first for the Stags on a power play. Skyler Munatones responded seconds later to equalize the game for the Tritons. UC San Diego went on a 11-1 run the rest of the way, shutting the stags out in the second and third quarters.


The Tritons played excellent defense throughout the game, holding the Stags to 2-for-8 on power plays. Jack Turner was in All-American form and tallied 13 saves, one steal, two assists and only allowed one goal.


The offense was balanced with 11 different Tritons finding the back of the net. Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt played well on both ends of the field and finished the day with a goal, two assists, a drawn exclusion and three steals.



Jason Evezardscored for the Anteaters within the first two minutes of the game. The Tritons had a couple of man-up opportunities early on in the first half, but UC Irvine’s defense kept UC San Diego at bay and held them scoreless. The Anteaters added another goal to take a 2-0 lead into the second half.


UC Irvine took its largest lead of the game at 3-0 1:15 into the third quarter.Munatones scored the next Triton possession and cut the deficit down to 3-1. The two teams traded man-up goals to end the third quarter.


Turnbow-Lindenstadt put the game within one early in the fourth quarter and assisted on a Konstantin Karlov goal to tie the game up. With 1:36 left in the game, Zlatan Nikocevic scored to reclaim the lead at 5-4. Turnbow-Lindenstadt had the chance to send the game into overtime on a penalty shot, but Harrison Land saved it to preserve the win for the Anteaters.
