Tritons Top St. Francis, Host Team at Princeton Invite

UC San Diego

PRINCETON, New Jersey – The University of California San Diego men’s water polo team opened up the Princeton Invitational with a bang and earned two victories over ranked opponents. The Tritons defeated No. 17 St. Francis Brooklyn 11-6 and took down No. T-12 Princeton in a 11-10 overtime thriller. Men’s water polo improves to 5-2 overall on the season.

UC San Diego won its first OT game since it defeated Brown 12-11 Sept. 9 2016.

The Tritons will look to take this momentum tomorrow when they face No. 16 Bucknell and No. T-12 Harvard.

Skyler Munatones and Kaden Likins each recorded a hat trick for the Tritons. Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt and Calder Hidle-Jones scored a pair of goals as well.

UC San Diego opened with a 3-0 lead to start the game and never looked back. The defense held the Terriers to only a single goal in each of the first three quarters.

Goals from Munatones, Cooper Milton and Likins put the Tritons up 11-4 with a little over four minutes left in the game. St. Francis scored a couple of last-minute goals to mount a comeback, but the deficit was too large to overcome.

The Tiger’s offense wasted no time getting going and scored the first two goals of the game in the first minute. Karlo Krmek’s first goal of the day made it a one-point game but Princeton responded to reclaim the two-point lead.

The Tritons stayed in striking distance of the Tigers throughout the first three quarter of the game. Princeton went up 6-3 for its larger lead of the day with 3:36 left in the second quarter. But the Tritons would go on a 3-0 run to equalize the score and close the gap.

Krmek found the back of the net to give the Tritons their first lead of the game at 8-7. Turnbow-Lindenstand would add an insurance goal but the Tigers would rally and send the game to overtime.

Munatones and Milton would score to give the Tritons a 11-9 lead after the first OT period. Princeton would score with 1:23 left but the Triton defense stood tall and came away with the overtime win.
