UC San Diego Finishes 4-0 as Host of West Region Showcase

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Storming back from a 2-0 deficit, the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team snagged a five set victory against Academy of Art Saturday in its final match of the West Region Showcase at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 22-25, 17-25, 25-15, 25-19, and 16-14.

The victory moved UC San Diego to 6-2 on the season and 4-0 as host of the six team tournament. The Tritons were the only squad to come away undefeated.

After hitting just .111 (22-14-72) over the first two sets against the Urban Knights, UC San Diego attacked at a scorching .469 (17-2-32) in the pivotal third frame. Trailing 14-10 in the deciding set, the Tritons scored six consecutive points to win the match.

Sydney Tekstra led the home team with a career high 22 kills while hitting .346 and completing a double-double by adding 21 digs, also a career best. Jessica Rieble finished with 16 kills and hit .481 and Emily Hubbard had 15 kills, 16 digs, and three service aces. Three other Tritons accumulated double digit dig totals including Susanna Limb (14), Josie Collier (13), and Alyson Penrose (13).

During the winning six point run, Tekstra contributed two kills and a block.

Rieble and Tekstra were named to the all-tournament team for their outstanding performances over the three-day event. It was the second all-tourney honor for Tekstra this season as she was also awarded the accolade at the Seawolf Invitational in Alaska.

As a team, UC San Diego hit .244 (66-24-172) overall, had nine aces, and held a 93-78 advantage in digs. The Tritons also had 10 blocks in the match.

The Urban Knights hit .197 (58-22-183) and got 19 kills from Ashley Pawlak. Pawlak and Mariana Figueroa had 20 digs apiece.

There were 31 tie scores and 12 lead changes in the contest.

Next up, UC San Diego opens its 20th and final California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season on Friday, Sept. 20 at Cal State East Bay.
