UC San Diego Swept by No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Facing the top-ranked women's volleyball team in the country Saturday evening, the University of California San Diego was swept by Cal State San Bernardino, falling by scores of 25-12, 25-12, and 25-21 at Coussoulis Arena in the Inland Empire.

UC San Diego fell to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). San Bernardino remained unbeaten, moving to 10-0 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.

The Coyotes had a tremendous night at the net, finishing with 13.5 blocks and holding the Tritons to a .021 (25-23-97) hitting percentage, their lowest of the season. San Bernardino hit a robust .356 (40-9-87).

Individually, UC San Diego was led by Jessica Rieble's 10 points on six kills, five blocks (one solo), and a service ace. Gina Cortesi followed with five kills and Sydney Tekstra had four. Alyson Penrose totaled a team best 10 digs.

For the Coyotes, Alexis Cardoza led all players with 13 kills while hitting .440 and Leilia To'omalatai dug a match high 14 balls. Moira Murphy hit .750 with nine kills and no errors in 12 attack attempts.

Cal State San Bernardino led the whole way in sets one and two.

UC San Diego led early in the third frame, but a 14-2 run by the Coyotes had them ahead by a score of 15-4. The Tritons then came alive, mounting a 13-4 run of their own to get them back within two points at 19-17. Tekstra tallied three kills during the spree. San Bernardino grabbed four of the next five points to take a 23-18 advantage, but UC San Diego proved resilient again, winning three of the next four points to make it 24-21. Rieble figured in all three of the scores, putting down two kills and adding a block. The Coyotes called a timeout and returned to the floor to see Marlee Nunlee collect the final kill of the night to give the match to the home team.

UC San Diego plays two CCAA matches next week, starting with a road contest at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday, Oct. 1. On Friday, Oct. 4, the Tritons host Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m.
