Swimming and Diving Impresses on Day One of USC Invite

LOS ANGELES, Calfi. – The UC San Diego men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams open up the season at the USC Invite, competing again some of the top talents in the country. The Tritons had several impressive individual showings with seven women swimming NCAA Qualifying times, four swimming “B Cut" times and two men swimming “B Cut" times.


Ellie Whitney highlighted the women’s day by swimming a personal best time and NCAA Qualifying time in the 500-yard freestyle. The sophomore finished 10th overall with a time of 4:54.84. Fellow Triton Aneta Wyzga finished less than a second behind her with a time of 4:55.64.

Brittney Miles and Cody Hargadon finished in the top 10 of the 50-yard freestyle. Miles came in seventh with a time of 23.08 and Hargadon came in ninth with a time of 23.30.

The 100-yard freestyle relay squad of Ciara Franke, Grace Murphy, Hargadon and Miles picked up a fourth-place finish with a time of 42.31, less than a second and a half off of USC’s A team first place finish.


The Tritons had their highest finish of the day in the 100-yard Medley Relay where they placed third. The squad of Tyler James, Edgar Chin, Spencer Daily and Will Blake had a time of 40.18. The only collegiate team to beat the men out was Virginia’s A squad. The Tritons finished over a second faster than the USC A squad. Later in the afternoon, the 100-yard relay team of Spencer Daily, Will Blake, Sawyer Farmer and Tyler James beat out the USC A team for a fifth-place finish.

Several men were able to crack the top-15 in their respective events. Hayden Johnson placed 13th in the 500-yard relay with a time of 4:33.60 and edged the two swimmers below him by .07 seconds. Daily placed 12th in the 50-yard freestyle and Zack Reuter finished 14th in the 200 IM.

The Tritons will return for day two at the USC Invite. Morning session will start at 8:00 a.m.
