Men's Water Polo Picks Up Two Wins on Day One of Gary Troyer Tournament

UC San Diego

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 9 UC San Diego men’s water polo team opened up day one of the Gary Troyer Tournament with a 12-7 win over Whittier and 12-9 win over Pomona-Pitzer. The Tritons ride a six-win streak and sit at 13-5 overall.

After cracking UC San Diego’s top ten career goal scorers list yesterday, Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt impressed with a five-goal performance against the Poets. Calder Hilde-Jones added two goals for the Tritons.

The Tritons won behind an opportunistic offense and a bend don’t break defense. UC San Diego took an early 5-0 lead, scoring all of its goals from man-up opportunities. The Poets got on the board midway through the second quarter but Turnbow-Lindenstadt countered with back-to-back goals including a point-blank pump fake shot. The Tritons were able to take a 7-3 lead at the end of the quarter.

Whittier opened up the third quarter with two goals to cut into UC San Diego’s lead. But the Tritons responded by outscoring the Poets 3-1 to close out the quarter. The Tritons took a 11-6 lead into the final period and relied on the defense to keep the lead for the win.

Skyler Munatones and Turnbow-Lindenstadt teamed up to lead the offense and scored three and four goals respectively.

The game was a tight affair early on as the Tritons held a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. A goal from Cooper Milton in the first thirty seconds of the second quarter gave the Tritons their first two-point lead but Pomona responded with two goals of their own to tie up the game. Turnbow-Lindenstadt scored off a power play to give UC San Diego a 7-6 lead at the end of the first half.

The two teams back in forth in the third quarter until goals from Myles Martinez and Munatones in the final minute and a half put UC San Diego up 10-8. The Tritons would add two more goals in the final frame to go up 12-8 with 1:49 remaining and utilize the cushion the rest of the way.

The Tritons finish up the Gary Tournament with two games tomorrow. They will play Fordham at 11:40 a.m. at Pomona-Pitzer and close out the tournament against Wagner at 3:10 p.m. at Claremont.
