Tritons Open Day Two of ITA West Regionals With Four Singles Victories
AZUSA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s tennis team continued action at the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships, hosted by Azusa Pacific University. After yesterday’s matches at Biola, today’s took place at Azusa Pacific. View all of today’s results here.
Singles - Round of 16
Picking up at the round of 16, four Tritons competed in the morning’s singles action, with all four emerging victorious.
Neil Tengbumroong cruised past his Biola opponent, 6-2, 6-1 to start his day.
Marc Isaia battled in his match. After dropping set one, Isaia bounced back with a win in set two and kept his momentum going during the super tiebreaker to come away the winner, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.
Sahm Irvine also showed his determination in his match. Irvine fell in set one but captured set two, then won by virtue of a lengthy super tiebreak, 15-13.
Sreeganesh Manoharan grabbed a 4-1 lead in his first set of the morning before his Sonoma State opponent retired with a wrist injury.
Singles - Round of 8
In the quarterfinals, it was a friendly and competitive affair as Isaia and Manoharan were pitted against each other. It was extremely close throughout the match, as Isaia dropped set one but narrowly won set two and the super tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6(2), 10-8.
Tengbumroong faced top-seeded Jakob Schnaitter of Azusa Pacific, falling 6-1, 6-1. Isaia will look to take down the number one seed as he is slated to face Schnaitter tomorrow morning.
Irvine also bowed out during the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-1.
Manoharan and Ermert earned a spot in the finals following a pair of close matches. They topped their Azusa Pacific foes, 8-7(4) in the quarterfinals, and then defeated another pair of Azusa Pacific opponents, 8-6, to advance to tomorrow’s finals.
Isaia and Ruh defeated their opponents 8-4 in the quarterfinals, but fell by the same score in the semifinals.
Tomorrow is the final day of competition for the 2019 ITA Regional Championships. This is UC San Diego’s first action of the fall.
