LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 10 UC San Diego men’s water polo team played another close contest at Canyonview Aquatic Center but came up on top 12-10 against Santa Clara. The Tritons increase their win streak to 10 and sit at 17-5 overall and 5-0 in the Western Water Polo Association.

With a couple of the Tritons typical star players dealing with foul trouble early on, it was freshman Kaden Likins who stepped up for the Tritons with three goals and an assist.

UC San Diego limited scoring opportunities and held Santa Clara to just 21 shots in the contest. Jack Ranj and Cooper Milton each had two steals for the Tritons.

The Tritons took and early 2-0 lead, but the game quickly became a back-in-forth affair from there. The first half featured three lead changes and four ties and ended with both teams knotted up with six points each.

The UC San Diego offense found a groove late in the third quarter and scored three unanswered goals to go up 10-7. The Bronco’s Ryan Werner scored in the final three seconds to cut the lead to 10-8. The Tritons would reclaim the three-point cushion midway through the fourth quarter. Likins found Calder Hilde-Jones in front of the net to push the lead to 12-8 with 3:27 left and put the game out of reach for the Broncos.
