LOUISVILLE, Kentucky ? The UC San Diego fencing team returned from the North American Cup in Louisville, Kentucky. This was a very high-level tournament that spanned Friday through Monday of the Martin Luther King weekend. It drew most of the best U.S. and Canadian fencers including some from the previous Olympic Games. It was also attended by fencers representing Bulgaria, Ireland, Israel, Sweden, and Ukraine.
The best result for the UCSD contingent was in Men's Foil by Michael Fong who came in at 44 out of 188 competitors. Fong was edged out of advancing to the next round by just one touch. The biggest event was Men's Epee which had 245 participants. The top Triton finisher in that event was Nick McGuinness coming in the 154 spot. In Men's Sabre, Bryan Kim finished 77th out of 141. Other Tritons fencing over the weekend were Ben Dorn and Armin Chan in Men's Foil, Casey GillcristJed Bassein and Patrick Burton in Men's Epee, Kalman Chodakiewitz and Jonathan Ott in Men's Sabre, and Pilar Alicea and Zitin Kachru in Women's Foil.
Overall the competition was a hard, but good experience for the UCSD fencers. There were hopes for some of the Tritons to break into the top tier that did not come to pass. Next, the Tritons return to fencing a team competition. They face UC Irvine and Cal Tech at home in the Main Gym on January 31st. in Women's Epee,
