LA JOLLA, Calif. - With great success, the UC San Diego Tritons fenced their final home meet of the season, Saturday, January 31 in the Main Gym. The women's team defeated UC Irvine 24-3 and then defeated California Institute of Technology 22-5. The men's team also defeated UC Irvine with a score of 23-4 and went on to defeat Cal Tech 24-3. This was the final meeting against these conference opponents and kept the men atop the conference and the women just one victory behind Arizona State.
The men's foil team again led the Tritons as they finished the day with 17 victories and just one defeat. Women's epee had a strong showing with eight victories and also just one defeat. The two strongest squads opposing the Tritons Saturday were UC Irvine's women's foil and Cal Tech's women's sabre. Both fell to the Triton women by 6-3 match scores.
Individual leaders for UCSD men were squad captains Ben Dorn, Nick McGuiness, and Bryan Kim, who all posted undefeated 6-0 records. Freshman foilist Michael Fong added another undefeated 6-0 record. Winter transferee Jon Ott made his first start for the Tritons and was undefeated with a 4-0 record. Brooks Eggerth won his first ever collegiate team bout to have a 1-0 record.
Leaders for the women were Pilar Alicea and Alisha Trigeiro who both had 6-0 records. Junior sabrist Trigeiro returned this quarter from taking classes abroad and looked ready to make a solid contribution for the rest of the season. Also adding undefeated records for the day were women epee fencers Amy Bianchini and Casey Gillcrist who were both 3-0.
The Tritons travel next weekend to South Bend, Indiana. There they will face Division 1 opponents Notre Dame, Stanford, and Air Force and other teams from the Midwest.
