Tritons Notch Winning Marks In South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - On February 7th and 8th the UCSD fencers competed in their largest team meet of the season at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. The Tritons faced nine different university teams. The women's and men's teams both finished the weekend with winning records of five team victories and four defeats.

The Triton women began on Saturday with a 22-5 victory over Air Force and then posted victories over Cleveland State (25-2) and Wayne State (21-6).  The victories against Air Force and Wayne State were important as Air Force is a regional rival and Wayne State, like UCSD, is one of just three Division II NCAA teams. The women's next matches were defeats to host Notre Dame (6-21) and regional rival Stanford (10-17). In the afternoon the men took the field. They started with losses to Stanford (8-19), defending National Champion Ohio State (8-19), and also to Air Force (11-16).  They finished the day with victories over Wayne State (18-9) and Cleveland State (20-7).  On Sunday the women defeated Lawrence University 24-3, lost to Northwestern 7-20, defeated Detroit Mercy 23-4, and lost again in a rematch with Notre Dame 6-21. In the afternoon the men lost to Notre Dame 9-18, then defeated Lawrence 25-1, defeated Northwestern 18-9, and finished with a victory over Detroit Mercy 22-5.

All the weapon squads contributed to the overall effort. Women's foil had 56 victories and men's foil had 52. They were followed closely by men's and women's sabre who each posted 50 victories. The epee squads posted 37 victories for the men and 33 for the women.

Individually, Ben Dorn and Bryan Kim had the most victories for the men, scoring 21 and 19 respectively. For the women, Pilar Alicea and Zitin Kachru each posted 16 victories and Alicia Trigeiro added 15.
In two weeks the UCSD team will fence its final regular season meet as they face conference opponents at UC Irvine on February 22.
